□ 제목: Structural Barriers and Mental Health Strain: The Role of Communication in Cultivating
Resilience for Undocumented Students

In the United States and elsewhere, *undocumented high school students and college students encounter numerous structural barriers that lead to educational, economic, and health inequities. In this presentation, I will discuss my use of a social ecological model of resilience to identify ways to attenuate the negative effects of structural barriers. As an example, I will present a longitudinal survey study that examines how hope communication from parents and teachers predicts undocumented and documented Latina/o/x high school students’ intentions to apply to college. Nevertheless, for undocumented students who pursue a higher education, many structural barriers that they faced in high school persist in college, and additional challenges emerge in college, all of which can lead to mental health strain. Yet, research indicates that undocumented college students underutilize the free mental health services at their school. Thus, for the second study, I will talk about a current project that uses a culturally-grounded, narrative-engagement approach to develop short videos that are intended to reduce the barriers to talking to a campus mental health professional (e.g., therapist or psychologist).
*Undocumented immigrants are people who reside in a country without legal authorization because they entered the country without authorization or they remained in the country after their authorization expired.
□ 강연자 소개:
Jennifer Kam is Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and she is a Faculty Affiliate with the Chicana/o Studies Institute and the Migration Initiative at UCSB. Guided by a social ecological model of resilience, Dr. Kam examines how stressors, rooted in structural barriers, are associated with the health and wellbeing of immigrant youth. In addition, she conducts research that identifies promotive factors at different levels (e.g., individual, interpersonal, institutional, cultural, state, and federal) to cultivate resilience and promote thriving. When studying stress and resilience, Dr. Kam utilizes quantitative (e.g., longitudinal survey data) and qualitative (e.g., semi-structured interviews). She is the former Chair of the Division of Health Communication at the National Communication Association, and she received the 2016 Early Career Award from the Interpersonal Communication Division at the National Communication Association. She is currently on the editorial boards of Journal of Communication, Human Communication Research, Communication Research, and Communication Monographs, and Dr. Kam has published extensively in these leading outlets.
